Mary Ferguson
Coach of the Year 2012 - SoccerMary was introduced to the game of soccer in grade eight at junior high and continues to play thirty-five years later. Playing at the women’s Premier level and attending several Provincial Championships are just some of her highlights. Mary currently plays on an over thirty-five team and will be attending Nationals in September of 2012.
Mary began coaching for the Surdel Soccer club fifteen years ago and for a number of years coached both the Surdel and Burnsview girls’ teams. She has coached at Burnsview for eight years now, first with the junior team and for the past several years with the senior girls. “I instinctively knew that the senior girls had the talent and drive to make it to the Provincial finals – with a little help of course!” exclaims Mary.
Burnsview ended up in ninth place in their run for the cup that year. Mary continued to build the team, supporting the student athletes and developing their skills. Mary has always taken the time to help both on and off the field, earning her the trust and devotion of each player on the team.
In 2011, the Burnsview Senior girls’ soccer team won their league and several tournaments, including the twenty-four team U-Vic Umbro Invitational in Victoria and the Provincial Cup. The team has added three Fraser Valley Championship banners to the Burnsview gym as well as winning two prestigious AA Provincial banners.
“The 2012 season has been just as exciting as the previous three, with yet another opportunity to attend Provincials’ for the fourth consecutive year. Coaching at Burnsview has been very rewarding, providing me an opportunity to share my passion for the game of soccer with some really wonderfully talented girls. I hope to continue the success of the soccer program at Burnsview for many years to come.” says Mary.
